Yesterday I had the awesome opportunity to attend a special screening of the new Guardians of the Galaxy flick, thanks to the lovely people at Disney Parks Blog. This is our second DPB meet up ( the first for the Monstrous Summer 24-hour Disney party.) If you haven’t applied for one of their events, you should keep an eye out because they’re wonderful. We closed down the pub Saturday night so we were running on four hours of sleep when we arrived at Downtown Disney to check out the film. Markus was very happy to debut his Star Lord costume for the first time, and I got to wear one of my punny GotG reference shirts. I was a little too tired to venture into my Rocket Raccoon costume so that’s saved for GenCon in a few weeks.
When we got to the theater, the Disney Parks Blog team did a great job of making everyone feel awesome with free popcorn and drink tickets, and limited-edition 3D glasses. The glasses, themed after the different characters from the film, are really solid and comfortable. They’re meant to be kept! After obtaining our wristbands, we stopped for photos in front of the large cardboard movie poster. Markus was pulled away for pictures with fellow attendees and the media staff. It was really fun seeing all of hard work pay off as I watched (and swooned) from the sidelines. The blog team had cute costumes as well, including this awesome AWESOME MIX VOL 1 tape costume.
So on to the movie! Like I said, we were functioning on two hours of sleep but despite that, my eyes barely blinked for the next two hours. I have been a huge fan of Marvel for nearly three decades but this movie, this one immediately rocketed to the top of my list. From opening to close, I was riveted to the screen. The movie makes for one of the most pleasant movie-watching experiences in a long time, with a refreshing script full of one-liners, adult innuendos (wait for the Jackson Pollock joke, people …), and curse words. There’s drama and thank GOODNESS, no unnecessary emphasis on a love story. I only stopped laughing and smiling for a few minutes. This movie is really and truly about the adventures of these people uniting to do what superheroes do – save the world (and they do so in extreme style.)
Somebody give James Gunn an award!
Chris Pratt is 150% perfection. Rocket Raccoon is beyond awesome, even if they trimmed down on his “Murdered you” comments. Groot? OHMYLAWD. Seriously, they made a movie with a badass animated raccoon and a talking tree, and the entire time you accept that as reality.
I was so impressed with the whole movie that I am itching to go back to see it a few more times. If you aren’t excited for GotG, you might be a corpse. It’s well-worth the price of a ticket and then some so get ready!
